Instagram is a great place to stay up to date with the latest skating and fitness news. It also provides a world of knowledge on fitness and health. With the popularity of fitness accounts rising, it’s important to be following influencers that know what they’re talking about.

The next time you’re scrolling through fitness pages, keep these questions in mind:

1. What are their credentials?

Is your favourite fitness influencer qualified to be giving fitness and nutrition advice? Check their bio for their credentials. Most personal training programs take months, even years, of education and practice. Understanding the body is a complex task– trust someone who understands not only how your body uses energy, but the implications of what happens when you don’t exercise with proper technique. As for nutrition, do NOT take diet advice from someone who has not undergone a formal education in nutrition. Generalized diets promoted online will not provide you with the energy your body needs to train at your maximum potential. In need of healthy snack ideas? Follow Lutz of Greens,  Olympic Medalist Meagan Duhamel’s wellness blog, that’s dedicated to providing healthy, easy to make, plant-based recipes.

2. What are they trying to tell me about my body?

Many different types of bodies can become great figure skaters, but with figure skating being an aesthetic sport, it’s normal to feel pressure to look a certain way. Following certain fitness accounts can decrease your body confidence without you even knowing it. Try to avoid accounts that promote exercising primarily to burn calories¬– not to build strength or improve your overall health.
